$550 will get you into some Hagon Nitros. 320 mm / 12.6" 310mm / 12.2"

If that was my budget id get these. It's quite a bit of shock for the money.

Default Ohlins S36PL

Check out the Ohlins. Motorcycle Metal is one of the sponsors and sells them at a discounted rate to forum members. I have the S36PL and the handling and ride improved dramatically.

I also think you should check out the Ohlins from Motorcycle Metal. Howard can give you some options depending on your budget and will build the shocks to meet your needs. You said you were more interested in comfort than handling, but it's nice to have both.

I a very happy with the 12.5" progressive 444's, standard springs. on a trip last summer with my wife and gear, maxed out in weight, just wound the tension to the max, bike handled great. think you would be wise to go at least 1/2" more travel.

I spoke with an Ohlin rep @ Bike Week. He said the 12" shock (without reservoir) has 3.25" of travel. The 12" Prog 444 has only 1.9" of travel. There are other reasons for buying a shock that is customized with spring size, etc. The JRI rep said their 12" shock had about 2.25" of travel (but 44 adjustment clicks of rebound.)

So, if you are determined to stick with a 12" shock, you may find yourself happier with a customized shock.

I have 11.5" Progressive 444s. I'm 220 and my ex wife is 170 and I didn't have any issues riding 2 up. I crank them all the way down solo and all the way up with a passenger. There are definitely better shocks out there but trying to find a "performance" lowering shock is just about impossible and I remain happy with my choice. Falls a little under your budget too.

Check out Works Steel trackers! They're sprung to your weight. Just switched to these and I really like the change.

Thanks for all the replies guys! Sadly, I am now more unsure of what to get haha. Sounds like there are too many great options out there. Either that or the stock shocks are just that terrible...
