I doubt it is the gasket, but hopefully so. If it is primary oil, thats good, probably an Inner Primary Bearing leak. The IPB has a seal that may be bad or the bearing itself may be bad.
If you are somewhat handy and have a Service Manual you can do it yourself or at least take off the inner primary cover and take it to someone to swap out the seal and bearing.
Replacing either of the seals in the transmission shaft area is fairly involved, requiring removal of the inner primary, which requires removal of everything inside the primary, and probably some tools you don't already have.
I had a shiftshaft seal leak there, on my '03. They said l could wait to fix it. And I rode one season with it. Then had it fixed. Big job, had done at my Indy.
So after researching this a bit I checked the drain plug, I was able to tighten it.
I was able to give it a good quarter of a turn, I wiped the bottom of the case with a paper towel last night. As of this morning it was still dry. I used a tissue and checked it.
Of course the bike was not ridden so it was cold all night. I will have to keep and eye out and see if it leaks anymore.
What really sucks is that I just purchased it last month and of course since it's old used bike I got no warranty from the dealership.
You probably got the leak. Unusual that the primary drain plug would leak but I guess the last guy to change primary oil got distracted or in a hurry. There is an O-ring on all three drain plugs I suggest you replace them next oil change. They are cheap. Also invest in a torque wrench 3/8 drive will do. On my 08 those drain plugs are only 10 to 14 ft pounds. I use torques wrenches from Harbor Freight and catch them on sale for $10. Best value for a torque wrench.
Well it's been about 24 hours since I noticed the leak. I went for a ride tonight and got everything nice and hot. I parked the bike in the garage and put a paper towel under it and after an hour no leak.
I did go back to the dealership I purchased the bike from and told the service department about the leak and they told me that they went through the bike and changed all the oils in it and did not notice any leaks. Anything that was wrong that needed to be fix was done. The guy at the service dept said we dont sell junk.
He said if it still leaks bring it in and they will look at it, at what cost I don't know.
Well they might not sell junk but the fact is your oil plug was loose. So you might want to point that out to them. If they changed all the oils then they were the ones that left the plug loose.
