i got one for my '06 dyna and it was a pos from the get go. wiring was wrong, instructions were extremely poor and once installed it didn't work at all, but did cause the ECM to start thowing all kinds of codes. took it off and added a SERT. runs great now.

That's a first. I've never heard anybody say they had a problem installing a DFO/TFI. Hook red to +, black to ground, and clip it to the injectors and that's it. But I guess it's possible to get a bad unit or something.

The instructions that came with mine looked like they were missing pages it didn't make any sense to me.I took it back to the shop where I bought it three times they couldn't get it to not backfire on decel.I'm right in the middle of a move right now but once I get settled in the DFO is comming off and it's going in to be dyno tuned with a SERT. Or...I'm trading it in on a Speed Triple I still haven't decided yet.

Here's a good writeup on the DFO including tuning instructions from Donny Peterson.

Oh

Thanks Doug!!

And thanks again to all who've responded to my question.

This forum is the absolute best "information pool" I've ever seen.

The reason for so many Q's (yes I have another one out there) is that I'm trying to get the bike set up for a trip to Laconia next month. I ditched a RDK and bought the WG and so far I couldn't be happier. Handles like a dream, looks friggin awesome, and just riding around in VA I'm much more comfy on it than I was with the RDK. We'll see how the wifey likes it on a longer run but so far so good.

Doug my bike is all stock right now except for the Rush 1.75 Slip-ons I installed last night. No special downloads from the dealer, all stock set up (except for the Rush)
ORIGINAL: Jimbo59

So which of you folks out there use the Dobeck TFI?

I've seen plenty-a-post about fuel management systems, and understand the variations of each, and considerations taken into account before purchasing.

I'm thinkin I like the theory behind the Dobeck product, not to mention the fact that I'm not lookin to do engine mods. Just looking to make the bike breath better through exhaust mods.

SE Stage 1//Ness Big sucker
Rush Slip-ons

For those that use it,,, how do you like the performance of your ride? How difficult was the install (I've seen their site)?

Does it aleviate the need to take the dang bike back to the dealer for any remapping?

Any issues/ steps I need to be aware of that aren't discussed on their site?

Thanks in advance for any input

Jimbo59,
I have the ST1340 (think thats right nomenclature). 06 Dyna can't use same as 05 and before.
I can only speak for the Dobeck TFI........... Works quite well, and plugs right in, and can be removed with no harm. My model has no screw settings; its all touch buttons. Easy to use.
Just rember, it only enrichens the fuel.
If you already have the StageI download, the TFI won't be of much benifit, if any.

I am glad I purchased the TFI. My bike is stock, except for drilled pipes, TFI, and K&N full flow filter kit. Put out 74HP/78lbs torque on the dyno with the mods I made.

Hope this helps ya.
DougJ

Doug,

The Wide Glide is all stock,,,except for the Rush 1.75 Slip-Ons I installed last night.

No special downloads from HD, all stock (except the Rush).
There were some problems (I didn't experience) with the early 06 year TFIs. Apparently some of them had the front and rear injector wires crossed...... Dobeck made them good via telecons, and sent folks new ones. I have never contacted Dobeck (cause no problems). I understand they stand behind their product 110%.
If you get the TFI, its all seat-of-pants tuning (sound, feel, visual). I spent days tuning mine in, and enjoyed every second of it. When I finally gave in to my buds, and had it put on the dyno, it was perfect. The poor guy almost (almost) didn't want to take my money for the 2 dyno runs he did on it.
He sold PCIIIs and did dyno tunes for a living. Told me I had a fantastic product, and to stick with it.
Mostly you need to learn to read your spark plugs, which we should all be doing rather routinely anyway.
If you don't want to deal with maps, etc. or the high cost of dyno tuners the TFI is the way to go.
What you pay for it, is all it cost + your time and attention.
Isn't necessary, if you don't open up the breather.

Good post. There's a very interesting story behind the development of the TFI/DFO. Mark Dobeck used to work for Dynojet, they screwed him over and he went into business on his own. His whole premise is that very few people need the Power Commander (which he helped develop.) Most of us just change out the intake and exhaust and for that, the DFO works fine. But lots of people think that more money or more complicated equals better. To me, it's as simple as looking at the intake forums and checking out all the people with questions and problems with the programmable gizmos. Then there's the neat little DFO with it's simple adjustments that will take care of everything I need. Sexy? No. Smart? Hell yes.

I still have a second gen. 1340 ST, I will part with for a decent offer. I have the H-D download with SE A/C and SEII's W/BCT's and the TFI didn't help my ride that much,so I took it out. Install is simple and adjustment is a snap.
