Maybe not demons, but with potentially expensive "nopes" and a bastard engine combo, why would I bother with a 1 year only Dyna out of the hundreds of used HD's that are available? There are NO positives that set that year apart, sorry...
Bastard engine? It's a twin cam 88, they made it from 99 to 06, it's just the latest evolution of that combo before it got bigger. Regarding the expense, if you're good with tools it isn't that costly.

It's is a bastard...the crank alone is an 06 only...do your homework my friend.
I got my '08 SuperGlide new. It currently has just shy of 80,000 miles. I have had all the maintenance done at approximately the recommended intervals, and have no complaints. I don't plan to ever get rid of it.

Who cares about the crank, that's not part of the 2006 issues. Besides, if it failed who in their right mind wouldn't go with a 96" crank? Only difference between the 88 and 96 crank is the stroke so I don't consider that as making it a bastard. If the snout in the cam chest or the primary side fits that bike only then I would agree.
I guess I am a bit late to the party on this thread. Been away for a while after owning Harleys for years. I am about to pick up an 06 Street Bob with 8K in like new condition for about trade in value. After reading this, I am understanding why the guy accepted my offer so quickly. Tell me about the primary bearing problem and what do I need to do to maintain it that is different from my other HDs? How will I know if there is a proble????? What are the symptoms? I knew that 06 was the first year of the 6 speed, but am I correct that it was the first year the Dyna went to the 96 from the 88? After reading this, I am getting a bit concerned. (Of course my last Harley had the Magnelli/Moretti EFI, so you may understand my anxiety)
I asked that same question. The early ('99-'01) tensioner was spring loaded and had a habit of wearing out every 3k-30k miles. I am pretty sure that by '06 the tensioners were changed to hydraulic, which have a better reliability rate.
I think 06 was the first year they used the hyralic tensioners in Dyna Models. I belive 99-05 had the spring loaded.
I am confused. Does my 06 have the hydraulic tensioners or spring? And does anybody have a part number for the newer transmission case that causes the problems for the bearing?
