On my '08 Dyna...78,000 miles, 103"...hearing a clicking sound going down the road. Not engine-related, because sound quits when I pull in the clutch lever. The sound is similar to loud tappets, and tempo increases with speed, but, again, stops when disengaging clutch. I have had clutch compensator sprocket and primary drive chain replaced with new oem parts, but the sound persists. The bike runs and rides perfectly otherwise. Anybody have similar problem?
Could it be your rockers? I know that after a while the pins will loosen up which is why rocker lockers and other type products are popular when rebuilding top end.
Start simple...loose heat shields, wheel bearings, stone in the tire treads, ect.
If you pull in the clutch lever you've isolated the driveline from the rolling chassis; bearings or tire treads would continue to make noise. With the sounds you're hearing disappearing when you pull in the clutch and RPM's fall settling the driveline I'd check the engine isolators; front isolator, rear isolator, and stabilizer. A loose isolator or broken stabilizer does happen...

X2... pulling the clutch in is just 'unloading' the engine, so in my mind, the engine is not removed from being involved. Especially if it increases/decreases with engine rpm and not overall bike speed.
I have had a front mount go bad, and break the mounting bosses on my front heat shield... heat shield vibrating and making a ticking sound, a loaded or unloaded engine make different vibrations. If you've never replaced your front isolator/mount... it may be time. I've got over 64k on my 08, and have replaced the front mount twice... 3rd time I installed a Predator mount.
Thanks for your input. Finally took bike to local dealer...connecting rod bearings and something bad with the crank. I had top end rebuilt about 8k ago, but was told that the bottom end was fine. Decided to have cvo 110 with 255 cams, V&H big shots, K&N heavy breather, and dyno-tuned. It's only money.
Well... and here we were hoping it would be something simple like a broken heat shield or a loose isolator
Hope you can get your ride back up restored and upgraded quickly; sounds like she'll be reborn with a touch more power but yea, that's the same thing I say on everything I do to my motorcycles; it's only money
