Default Been Having a Few Issues Lately

Hello All,

I am new to the forums but I have been looking around for quite a while. I searched for similar issues but I couldn't find anything on this particular problem. I am hoping that you Dyna lovers might be able to help me out!

I have a 2015 Street Bob. I recently put Vance and Hines Short Shots on the bike (this past Friday). I did not add a fuel pack or do any tuning as I was told it wouldn't really matter TOO much until I added my intake later on.

Since making the update, the bike sometimes stutters a little bit on startup and I have to try more than once to start the bike. This happened a couple of times in the last few days. Well last night, I decided to move my bike to the other side of the yard and park it on the grass (to keep it out of view from people on the main road). This morning when I came out, I unlocked the bike and turned everything on. All indicators appeared normally. When I went to start the bike, everything went blank like the battery was dead. I did not leave any lights on and this bike only has 4k miles so I doubt the battery is actually dying here.

My question is; would this actually have more to do with parking on the grass (wires getting damp, etc) or changing the exhaust out? I can't imagine that a new exhaust that is made for this bike would result in draining the battery when the bike is off. That really just doesn't make any sense to me.

Thanks in advance for all of your help!

-George

as far as the starting issue , start with all the battery and starter connections , both positive and grounds. I would suspect a slightly loose ground connection . Check you charging system output ( even a cheap harbor freight multimeter will work fine). if the charging system show around 13-14 volts , then have the battery load tested. not sure how comfortable you are working on the bike but there are many videos showing you how to check the voltage up to how to completly diagnose the entire charging system. parking it on grass shouldnt be an issue.
As far as the pipes/tuner question there are many opinions . You probably wont hurt nything running those pipes without upgrading the tune, but the bikes come very lean from the factory anyway and the pipes will allow more flow, even without intake upgrades. Even a stock bike will rub better and cooler with a tuneof some type. The stage one download from the dealer will help , but a good tuner will really show you some improvements on how the bike runs and will run cooler too

Take some sand paper to your battery terminals and then coat them with dielectric grease. I'll bet it starts right up.

Check your battery connections to ensure they are tight. The non-starting issue has nothing to do with the bike being on grass. Not sure how often your riding the bike but I would recommend getting a battery tender to keep the battery fully charged.

As for the bike stuttering, If the pipe is the only thing that you changed, then it is most likely the reason. I'd recommend getting a tuner, my preference is the Powervision. You can get fuel maps that will help your bike run better. Especially like the PV because as you make performance upgrades, you can keep updating the maps to help performance.

Good luck!

Thanks, guys. I ride the bike every day pretty much so it definitely wasn't a matter of it sitting around for too long. I'm thinking that the battery connection makes a lot of sense because that would explain not only the starting issues here or there but also the problem with getting no juice at all today. I will rub down the connectors and see if that helps when I get home. If not, I'll take a look at the actual battery's charge and see if there is a problem there. When I worked on the pipes, I took off the ground and disconnected the O2 sensors. When putting everything back together, maybe I didn't tighten things up enough, etc.

I'll be sure to report back!

Almost certainly the battery, especially if you were fiddling with connections...!

+1 on getting the tune, I just installed a PowerVision last night (also new pipe and intake) and the bike is like night and day different in every way. There are cheaper options, but I know that I am going to change more performance elements down the line (cams, heads, etc) and the PowerVision allows you more control.

Would highly recommend 1) changing your intake and 2) at least getting the stage 1 tune from HD, or look into a VH FuelPak!

best answer... hit everything i was going to say

@ "stuttering":example of tuned vs untuned

v&h grenades:

first run/fire up... bad... untuned, smoke is anti-seize on the o2 plugs and first run pipe goodness (normal):

after PV 3 runs
