I can tell you about my dyna lowrider will wobble at 75-90 mph. It is just the bike. The tire is part of the problem. I get fish tailing on take off also.
Thanks for the input, after this happend I checked the bike out. The shocks were on the lowest setting. But I did notice something that looked odd to me. The swingarm was mounted to the trans. If the engine and trans are on rubber mounts whould this allow the swingarm to twist?
Any thoughts.
Brian ~ you've exactly identified theproblem, and I notice it consistently when I'm taking a long, sweeping corners at 80+ m.p.h. on my '00 FXD, there are several companies who have a solution; the only one I can think of off hand is sputhe engineering (google). Longer, higher speed corners cause rubber mounted engines to flex the swingarm due to lateral torque. The device, which I'm finally having installed, does not allow lateral flexing.
And, yes, it only happens but does happen consistently when I go into a corner at speeds substantially over the suggested speed; but, in my opinion, a bike should smoothly navigate any corner up to that point where you're scraping the frame.
[&:]don't mean to hijack but dang! man, the way some of you say you ride your bikes on the edge makes me want to go change into diapers! I think we can all say, biasedly, that the dynas are arguably the best handling harleys w/most in the family offering the best of both worlds (aka sport touring?)
so as you've indicated about bags, touring, etc. if not a fxdwg then something in the fl series.
good luck!
I have an 03 WG and the newer ones have a bit different set up, but here is my2 cents worth. I used to experience what you did , however I don't have the problem any more. Icheck tire air pressure often ( 30 front 36 rear per manual) , adjust air pressure for 2 up riding going to 40 in the rear AND adjust the rear shock setting for solo or 2 up riding. I use setting 3 for solo and 5 for 2-up. It only takes a couple minutes, but it is sure worth it. You can feel the difference right away. My buddy has an 05 low rider and he was complaining about similar handling in turns. We checked his shock setting. Turned out one side was at 1 and the other at 4-- goes to show ya it's a good idea to check this out anyway once in a while.
I have the stock Dunlop, but next spring plan to re- do with the Metzlers--tons of good reviews on these skins.
Comeing off a high speed drag race you get the front end wobbly slow the front down faster than the back and it helped alot as for the high speed cornering I have also feltit to be very unstable I first thought it was front fork twist but my last Super Glide did not do it so I am in on the swing arm or rubber mount motor. As I said the last bike no problem so it has to be the motor mounts.JMO
As seaox has said you gotta set them up correct. Also riding style can play a big part, you gotta set your bike up for the cornerand power through the on the gas. Sure she might buck/wobble a little, these are 600 lb.+ bikes after all, but its all predictable and part of the fun of these great bikes. IMHO
Mine used to wobble a lot on the sweepers but now I'm happy on her all day at 90 plus ... bags and screen included ... it also comes down to getting used to the bike, I don't notice the wobble anymore, that's what 9000 mils of riding this year does.
Flyin Brian - you are right to be concerned about the fact that the swinging arm is mounted off the back of the gearbox. I have an 06 Wideglide which crashed on a left hand bend back in April due to an 'unexplained' loss of control.I was doing 40mph on a dry sunny day. After the accident the bike was examined by the Policewho found that the casting which the swinging arm pivots through had cracked open which is probably why it wouldnt go around the corner. The bike is currently undergoing full metalurgy reports so cant say definatively that is what happened for legal reasons .The bike suffered fairly light damage - I lost my leg !
