Default Seat Quest

Greetings,

In quest of seat nirvana......

In my garage I currently have the stock seat, HD Tallboy seat, Corbin Classic Solo and Mustang Wide touring. All these seats were bought used and figured I'm always willing to try something different in my quest for seat nirvana.

All these seats have pro's con's.

HD Tallboy - Last night I through the Tallboy on for a 2up ride with the wife to go out for dinner. I haven't ridden with the Tallboy in a while and forgot how much I like the seating position (2" up and 1.75" back). It's got a wide flat profile that I find very comfortable, and gives lots of legroom (inseam of 34"). Last time I had the seat on the bike was 2 summers ago when I went to the Dragon, and did a return trip from Asheville, NC in 10 hours (710 miles). Zero complaints with the seat,....except it looks like a huge vinyl tumor on the bike.

Corbin Classic Solo - First leather seat I've ever had on any bike. Hard as a rock, but that was never an issue when actually riding on it. It's sits the rider about 1-2" back and 1" or so lower than stock. The seat is very comfortable, and the backrest geometry is the best I've tried. But I get hot spots on the underside of my thigh where the top of the seat meets the sidewall of the seat. The seat also transmits a high level of vibration from the bike, as well as feeling everything from the road. I love that this seat actually locks to the bike and the backrest is mounted to the underside of the seat.

Mustang Wide Touring - I do not like the backrest on this seat. Feel like it scooches me forward a bit, and also do not like the shape of the backrest. The seat itself is pretty comfortable though. It feels a little taller than stock and a little rearward from stock, but not a lot. The other seats feel noticeable more different from stock than the Mustang. Padding is more dense than stock, but not brick hard like the Corbin. Actually, a nice compromise. The seat is 16" wide providing a nice cushy perch, and is not as aesthetically offensive as the Tallboy.

Having said all of this, I want something in leather that is dimensionally similar to the Tallboy, but not as aesthetically challenged. Any ideas?

Have you considered getting a custom made seat?

With all the seats you do have, maybe this could be what you are looking for. It`s not expensive and I`m sure you could resell it if you don`t like it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/121405149121...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Last week, I had finally completed a cam install that was fraught with many "issues" and "learning experiences". During that month long install, my wife and I had done a bike trip to VT. She has her own FLD and my buddy graciously lent me his Sportster 1200 Custom, which had a Mustang Wide Touring and .....that same bead wrap. It came off after about 3 hours.

My challenge is, I like the height of the Tallboy, but don't like the vinyl, or the look. There was a Danny Grey LowIST seat for sale here recently that I should have jumped on. I think the TourIST or LowIST in leather may be the next experiment.

I see a lot of praise for C&C seats on here... i think thats the direction i am going to try next. i'm a tall rider as well, 6'4, and like the look of those a lot. the option of the backrest is nice too

So of course I'm a fan of the C&C and they do every seat custom. I had a the Mustang Vintage Touring on my old 48 and for some reason it applied too much pressure against a nerve and my left leg would literally go numb!

That being said, if you like the tall boy, maybe you should give sick saddles a call and have them re-tool it with leather cover, shaping, etc. They also have an incredible reputation for their custom work.

I've been giving strong consideration to a C&C seat. I think the rider position and quality are very similar to Corbin. The question is, what rider position do you like? While I like the Corbin / C&C more low slung and back position, I like the taller position with more leg room of the Tallboy better.

Absolutely correct, they can however make what you want and pricing is within the realms of normalcy.

But if you like your tallboy with the exception of the covering you could simply have it recovered in a manner you like!

Being that the Tallboy looks like ***, I don't think any material it's recovered with would alter the shape of the seat though.

I had called C&C a couple of times to see if they would make a seat that raises the rider 1" vs. lowering the rider. They said they don't do that. Unfortunate.
