Default Broken Belt?

So I got a question I have 99 dyna lowrider I broke the belt on it while riding the today. I was riding kinda hard going thru a turn and downshifted hard right before coming out of turn I crank on it go to shift and felt like missed shift then Hurd some clanking thought I just missed a gear then belt shot out the back. So I pulled over ran the bike through the gears and front pulley spins and no transmission noise. But kinda worried transmission had something to do with belt breaking. Belt looks to be in good shape other than where it broke. Anyone have any experience with this. Also dropped off at a local victory dealership cause was closer and that's where I bought the bike used. Bike ha 16k miles

Not that common. The biggest belt killer is rocks getting caught under the belt as it feeds the pulley. That can tear or hole it, causing it to fail immediately or even much later.

It's not likely your tranny caused the failure. Even then a good belt will just lock the wheel if the tranny locked up.

Sure would appreciate it if you'd post up what they charged. I've always done my own work on my '04 FXDP and recently replaced a broken belt. Wow, that was a LOT of work just to replace a drive belt (I'm used to replacing chains, which is 20-min job on a dirt bike) & was the 3rd time I've had to pull my primary apart in the last yr. I'd be curious to learn what a shop would charge. I might let the local dealer handle it next time.

Last year on my ULTRA, the same thing happened, and I NEVER beat on the bike, never a burn out or anything like that, had about 30k miles on it........
Driving the highway, started skipping and bucking, engine was fine, but the bucking sorta scared me.....the teeth of the belt were coming off......pulled over.....seems the belt picked up a rock or something........towed home....
Did the replacement myself and as mentioned by someone else,,,,,,a HELL of a job doing it.....PIA........but a LOT cheaper than the shop......
Gotta be about 5 hours labor......plus parts(belt alone is $250)......I"d say maybe about $600-$900........

I don't know...belt failure is very rare. Most go the life of the bike. Chains are dirty, noisy, and need frequent adjustment. Until you get into the high HP, or ride on gravel roads frequently, I'd prefer the belt.

Do you still have the 'guards' on the bike/belt ? I've heard of guys breaking belts when they have removed the guards but never when they are in place on the bike...b.

If you're planning on doing heavy motor mods convert to chain now.
