Pipes alone look and sound good, but don't necessarily improve performance. If you open up the lungs, you'll need to rejet.
As far as installation, I installed my SideShots in a couple of hours. I'm not the most mechanically inclined and it wasn't difficult. The V&H web page has the install destructions on line for download. Give them a look-over and you might find that doing it yourself, you can save a load of cash which you can then spend on more bike crap!
i got the pipes on. i bought a screamin eagle air cleaner and rejet kit. the air cleaner says that i need to download the new ECM calibration using the Digital Techniciam at a harley dealership. it says if fail to recalibrate could redult in severe engine damage. Does rejetting solve that or will it still need to be taken to dealership
Bluing is caused by heat, and all pipes blue eventually, no matter how well tuned- that is, if the bike is ridden at all. That's why most pipes have chrome heat shields. Sounds like you have a carb, so the 88-89 Sportster 1200 needle for the idle jet is the only thing you need to richen up the fuel mix a bit.
