I decided to take a chance, and I bought the Chrome HD engine guard for 06 and up dynas. Got home and 6 minutes later had it bolted on to my 02 FXD. It was a little tight getting the upper bolt in (i don't have stubby ratcheting wrenches, just standard box wrenches) but it was easy peasy.

This is interesting...do you have the p/n of those engine guards? How about a photo of the installed bars?
I bought an engine guard for a 2006 and up FXD from HD a couple of years back by mistake and they would NOT fit my 2001 FXD. I was lucky that the dealer took them back without charging me a restocking fee...the top mount was not a problem, the lower mount U-bolts were...they would not align to the frame to get the U-bolts inserted.

I ma pretty sure this is the guard part number: 49010-06 My thought was "hey the switchback boards bolted right up! why wouldn't the switchback engine guard..." So I talked to the parts guy at Horny Toad HD in Temple TX and walked out with 06+ dyna engine guard in Chrome.
