Thanks for the input guys , I have a lot of research and comparisons of SE , Andrews and S&S . Since the bike is at the dealers for winter storage just thought I'd take advantage of gathering info and shopping around . I have 3 local Indys I'll touch bases with also .
Just got a stage 1 , pipe and tuner . And was talking with the dude at the dealer about dropping a cam , he suggested HD 55 or what ever brand id like . That's probably as far as I'd like to go with the motor . So what's my best bang for the buck ?
Best "bang for the buck" is to run the cam that's already in there.
I'm in the same boat now. I'm considering a cam upgrade for the lopey idle
Most of all but wouldn't mind more power. For me,, I don't short shift but I don't rev the crap out of it either. I keep it between 2600-3000 most of the time. Just putting around I usually shift around 3300 but am not afraid to run it up. So for me I have to find a cam that's strong and efficient in that rpm range with a lopey idle.
You've described the S&S 583. I chose that one because I wanted more passing power on 2 lane roads. I got what I wanted plus a nice lopey idle..

If by bang you mean EPA gayness then yes. It seems most of what we do when modifying / tuning our machines in order to get them running cooler and with more power, amounts to an EPA end run. Our rides don't come optimized for us, they come optimized for compliance with EPA stupidity.
Wife has an 08 Low Rider, Stg1 with SE mufflers; just put S&S 551 E-Z starts in. Expect more torque & HP in riding range of 2000-5000rpm. Will be dyno tuned with SEPST
I have an 08 Fat Bob with SE 103 cyls & cast pistons @ 10:1 advertised CR, RB Black Hole pipe, SEPST. I'm running S&S 583 E-Z starts and am very happy.
We really like a little extra passing power and torque without making the motors too high strung for comfortable touring. (Been there, done that already)
Lots of good info already given. As others have said, do lots of research and ask questions. I installed Andrews 57H cams last summer (with lots of help from this forum). I had researched a lot as to the wide variety of choices. Take into consideration if you plan to do head work as well, as this will influence the cam choice decision.

Whatever it is let's get going on this, move it to the front burner and get cracking. I, like numerous here had 57's with only stage one and they rocked!
I put SE 211's in my 07 FXD. Gains, overtaking around 100 - 110 ks, noticeable improvement and felt like that's the way it should be as standard. Losses, not quite as nice around town, kinda lumpy and needed a few more revs to pull away from the lights, easy enough to live with though. Along with S&S slipons, a SE tuner and high flow air cleaner, l fitted them ages before the cams, l was more than happy with the improvement.SE tuner map was spot on for them too.
l'll do the same to my 103 Lowrider eventually.
Well I spoke with a couple of Indys one told me he suggested to go with S&S cam I forget which one . The other works for Harley and has been building engines since the early 90s , and does work from his home also . Very knowledgeable individual we spoke about everything from front tire to rear tire . And he shared different experiences on dynos and engine builds setups , more or less we decided to go with an Andrews cam due to any future mods which are none as of YET . As soon as he gets me a list of everything I need I will share it with you all , till then it's a waiting game .
