I got sick of looking at the bulky license plate setup sitting on the rear fender so I decided to make my own side mount license plate holder. I started with a small 1/8" sheet of aluminum and marked out from the lower left corner the 4x7 plate then marked off the mounting tab that would be used to mount to the shock mount or axle nut. this is very easy to do. from the lower right corner of the plate mount I marked 2 1/2" out and up then from there I marked a 1/2" back in then drew a line to each corner of the plate. this gives the plate mount an angled less bulky look. from there I marked another set of lines on the mounting tab from corner to corner and used the center location as my point to drill for mounting bolt to go through. I cut it out on a band saw and used several different grinders/sanders to round the edges and smooth it up then I used a metal break to bend the mounting tab back but you could use a vise also. once it's done use your license plate as a template to mark the four license plate mounting holes. I used a spray can of Krylon Wrinkle Finish to paint it when I was done. I still need to add a license plate frame with an led light to be legal but for now I think it looks good. Click on the link to see the pictures and diagram of how I made it. what do you think?
Dude, that looks good! Only question, isn't the plate supposed to have a light on it? If the light part isn't a law in my state, I may have to steal your idea
great job on you plate mount. suggestion though, you might want to a a stiffening bead or dartinthe middleof yourbend for stiffness, itwill relief stress on your bend and make it break. just a suggestion. jackyl
I thought of adding a center brace but it's not like the plate weighs anything so I don't feel it's an issue, if it does break then I'll make another one and add a center support.
