Default M/C question

If you believe the master cylinder to the front break is bad, do you replace the entire unit, or get one of those rebuild kits? Maybe a dumb question, but I've never opened up a m/c before.
thanks

If the MC chewed up (brake fluid has played hell w/ the PC..., or it has battle scars) - get a new one

If the MC in good shape - rebuild it..., cheaper..., and not hard

So whatever can go wrong with the m/c can be corrected with the rebuild kit?

That's a loaded question

Stripped cover screw..., stripped banjo bolt threads..., cracked housing - no

Leaking seals..., broke / sticking plunger..., weak spring..., leaking cover gasket - yes

A few tidbits from my adventures...

Don't use metal picks to dig out the old seals.
Don't roll or pinch the new seals during installation, lube with compatible brake fluid and watch closely.
Pay careful attention to all part orientations.
Take pictures during teardown.
Bench bleed the MC before you attach the line(s).
Clean enough may not be clean enough.
Have extra screws and/or clips handy.
Don't f'k up the brake switch.
Be prepared for bleeding to give you a headache.
Drink lots of beer (but remain clear headed!) and have fun!

Default M/C question

Going to try and pick up the kit today at the local shop. I also read that Harley issued a recall for the 2012 master cylinder banjo bolt fittings, but if course they told me my particular VIN wasn't one of them. So maybe I'm not the only one having issues.

Too add...

While assessing, look closely for corrosion in bore...

So, before I proceed with the rebuild kit, I thought I'd try to rule some other things out. I pulled the front caliper and sprayed/cleaned it up real good with brake cleaner. Pistons seem to be operating fine. I just put a
new cover on the m/c, but it started raining like hell so I haven't been able to get out and ride it. If none of this makes a difference, I'll install the kit next.
