Reviving this post. I finished the install a few hundred mile ago and it's all good. I figure I'd make a video of the process, hopefully it helps someone trying to do the same. Don't make my mistakes.
Yep; and flippin' double nut those exhaust studs. They're a 5/16-24 stud; I double nut them with chrome acorns, but even the HD #7593 exhaust flange nuts will work. You'll thank me later
Put brass nuts on those studs and the future owner of the bike will thank you even more. The dissimilar metals of the steel studs and the brass nuts won't seize.
No more "I bust the exhaust stud, how do i....." threads.
Funny how things work. They popped right out this morning. I almost overreacted. Thanks again for all the tips.
One other tip. Use the flat SE gaskets rather than those tapered ones. They may be a little harder to get to seal, but they won't crush so much and (potentially) expand into the exhaust port itself, blocking flow.
Get a 3"long gray PVC adapter that measures 1 7/8" on the outside. It'll push those new gaskets straight into the exhaust port with no effort.
you can also use the retaining "C" clip to seat the new gaskets into the exhaust port or even a large washer the good thing about the "c" clips is you always have one handy...
Thank you all. I'm not handy at all but after changing the bars myself I got really hooked on working on the bike in my garage. I'm glad this is not a big deal, I'll go back and start picking again. I really appreciate the feedback.
Great to hear that you're enjoying working on the bike, have fun!
