Are you referring to the Hayden? .. did you have one? how many miles before you noticed plastic chunks in the primary?

I guess there is something I'm missing with the Baker recommendations if you have to tear the bike apart and check it every 5k. Seems to defeat the purpose!

Will the old style outers with the inspection cover fit the newer bikes?

You can let it go til you hear a tick in the primary on cold start idle while on the side stand.. It's the chain tapping the primary cover.. Adjust it then..

Ticking means it's loose - whinning means tight , beating on your bearings among other things

Yes the Hayden...There wasn't chunks just small flakes (quit a few). When I can get to a regular computer I will post a pic*. There wasn't that many miles on it, you can see how clear the oil was.
It is very easy to pull the primary cover. Takes longer to do an oil change than to pull the cover.
If you separate the baker into two pieces you can do it without taking the front compensator sprocket apart. It's actually very simple to dis-assemble the compensator even if you had to.
I would not wait till you hear ticking before inspecting the tension, there's a lot of power transfer in that chain and you don't want it getting real sloppy. Besides, the primary chain is very robust and it rarely stretched all that much. If you do it every 7-10k that should be plenty.

I could be wrong here, but isn't that an 80 dollar, one time use gasket around the primary cover?

They may say so but, I've used them repeatedly and change them at the 4th inspection. It's a cometic gasket and far from a one time use. Reseal with confidence.
