Hey guys, so changed primary oil last week before a trip and had a few questions...
1. Following instructions I filled the primary case with oil as it was on the jiffy stand with 32oz fluid and it began to leak out towards the end, I stood the bike up quickly and jammed a piece of wood under the jiffy and put the cover back on. Maybe lost around 3-4oz, should I open back up and top off but with the bike standing and NOT on the jiffy?
2. Sometimes the bike sounds like it is grabbing harder from neutral to 1st gear, could this be due to some of the loss of fluid or my imagination? Sure you fellas know how paranoia may ensue when you think you did something wrong LOL Bike runs GREAT and grabs every time with no slips but just wanting to make sure is all.
Especially when it comes to fluid questions it's very helpful to post the year of your ride; the numbers on the primary and transmission have changed over the years.
Since you're using 32 ounces I'll figure it's a later year bike. I used to just put a scrap piece of 3/8" plywood under the jiffy before I removed the derby cover to either do primary fluid changes or to adjust the clutch pack. Using a 3/8" bit of wood you won't lose any fluid when that cover is off.
Now with +2" over Wide Glide tubes I need to use a 2x4 along with the jiffy stand extension but still, I don't lose any fluid; I adjusted my clutch pack and clutch cable freeplay yesterday and with the 2x4 under the extension, I didn't lose a drop.
Add a few ounces to the primary to fill as shown in cggorman's images; just put a bit of wood under the jiffy stand first

I have a 2011 FXDC and the last few changes I had it on the jiffy stand and just poured in the full quart. It didnt pour over. My service manual does not state jiffy or upright but says 32oz Wet or 40oz dry.
