Default fork oil measurement please help

does anyone know what the measurement should be from the top of the fork tube to the oil in the forks when fully compressed on a 2014 fxdb? (i'm assuming this is checked with all the springs and washers out?)i lost a bit when changing from burley slammer springs back to my stock suspension. i just want to make sure i have the correct amount. also when i put the top cap back on, is it o.k to do that with the forks fully extended and tire off the ground? may be newbie question but don't want to run into any issues, i was dumb enough to pull both top caps off when changing back to stock springs.

With stock springs, washer, and spacer the FXDB holds 28.6 ounces - 845cc per tube; that's equal to a 3.74" - 96mm fluid height when measured with the spring, washer, and spacer removed and the slider compressed.

I've always found it easier to put the fork caps back on with the fork tubes off the bike; easier to control the fork cap that way. I hand tighten the caps, put the tubes back in the clamps with the caps an inch or two above the upper clamp; I snug up the pinch bolts to hold the tubes then I torque the caps. 22 - 59 ft-lbs. I torque the caps to 30 ft-lbs, never an issue.

Once the caps are torqued you can slightly loosen the pinch bolts and set the fork tube protrusion, 14.6 - 17.1mm. Torque the pinch bolts 30 - 35 ft-lbs...

Edited to add: Since you apparently don't have the SM I should be more clear on that fork tube protrusion measurement. The 14.6 - 17.1mm protrusion is measured from the top of the upper clamp to the top of the fork tube cap; you'll want both tubes at the same protrusion...

ok so with the forks fully compressed use something to check the actual depth of the oil from the bottom of the fork tube? which should be about 96mm in height? and after that let the forks out all the way, add the spring, washer and spacer and re-install the top cap? i really appreciate the help

You got it The fork fluid should be 3.74" - 96mm from the top edge of the fork tube with spring, washer, and spacer removed and slider compressed. Draw the fork tube up and drop in the spring, washer, and spacer then slowly compress the spring; take care you don't cross up the threading as you start the fork cap.

Follow the torque specs, it's only your front forks

awesome, i think i misunderstood you the first time, so i'm measuring the distance where there is no fluid from the top to where the oil starts? i thought you meant measure the oil depth itself.

The 49mm tubes hold a fair amount of fluid, when you change the fluid it takes 2 liters to do the job. You measure from the top edge to the fluid with the tube compressed in the slider.

I added some info in my 1st post to help clarify what I meant by protrusion...
