Default Help with 02 superglide

hello there! Recently purchased an 02 superglide with 11,000 miles, recently got into riding, having a loss of power issue when motorcycle gets warm, idles fine but as soon as engine temp rises I'm having a complete loss of power, motor quits, no power...nothing, let it sit for 5 minutes and it fires right up, take off again and experience the same problem, any guidance as to where to look would be very helpful, thanks Derek

i would check the tank.. An 02 with 11k isn't many miles.. I had a similar issue on another bike years ago. Same thing would happen when then petcock was on main, but not prob on reserve. There were particulates in the tank (old gas gets gummy) than would get stuck on the screen after it started sucking in fuel when on main, starving the bike of fuel..If it sat, the crap would float to the bottom of the tank and it would start again no prob... I emptied and acid cleaned the tank, and put a fuel filter between the tank and carbs. The later more so I could see fuel going to the carbs..

Also, if you find anything in the tank, there might be some crap in the carbs as well, which could do the same thing. So if you do have to take the tank off to empty/clean it, might be worth cleaning the carbs...

sorry, I guess I should be a little more specific, when I'm saying it has a "loss of power" I mean everything goes out, motor, lights, everything...almost as if you shut the key off, I was hoping by posting maybe someone had experienced similar issues that they have resolved and if there was a common problem...just looking around the forums I've came up with a few guys that had complete loss of power problems stemming from bad battery cables and bad ignition switches.....I appreciate the help! Keep it comin!

First things first.

Check the battery cables and ground (both ends).

Check the battery voltage, static and under load.

Check continuity/integrity of the ignition switch.

Until you do these things, you and everyone else will just be guessing. PS, when you do find the problem, report back so someone else might benefit from your experience. Don't be a one and done poster.

Nomadmax-appreciate the tips!! Will check it out tonight and let you all know what I find! Thanks again

Well I appreciate the responses to my post! Let me re-cap on this, I was experiencing a complete loss of power(motor and electric)
after engine temp was hot( both at idle and while riding) let it cool off and it would fire up and idle until temp reached a certain point, this is an 02 superglide with 11,000 miles, nomadmax steered me in the right direction along with some input from a few friends who are way more knowledgeable than I when it comes to motorcycles, found a loose cable on the circuit breaker and alls I did was tighten it up, seemed to fix the problem, idles great, no issues riding...sorry about the picture being in the middle of the post

Hey OP, take note what wire goes to what post on the circuit breaker for future events. The 02 FXD is a real work horse, you'll enjoy it like I do mine.
