Default Windshield

Hi all, I am a very near future owner of a 2000 FXDX Superglide, I should have it next week. I was wondering your opinions on the different windshield options. there are mid size, full size, quick release etc. I definately want to buy one for the long rides but not all the time so I am thinking the quick release one at least.
Any input would be appreciated and will help my decision

thank you

I originally got the bigger windshield - seemed ok at dealer but by time I got home found it in middle of my vision and annoying. Went back and got the smaller version - they call it "compact" but still a good size. I look over the top of it. Also got the quick release hardware. Had this idea of removing it except on trips, etc. Fact is, I never remove it except when Im cleaning the bike.

harpoon,

I have the quick release windshield on my 06 Wide Glide. It is a great windshield in terms of its looks and the ease of installation/removal. There are 2 version, standard height and compact. I have the standard and the wind hits me on the top of my head. I used to be able to see over the windshield but I have lowered the rear and now look through it. I intend to purchase a shorter replacement Lexan. Memphis Shades sells replacement shields for stock Harley winshields for a reasonable price ($80). My recommendation on height is to get a shield that you can see over but keeps the wind off your body and face. Though the Harley shield is a little pricey, it seems to be a well engineered product. When you remove it, the fork tubes are clean, no hardware is left behind.

I have the HD compact and am fairly pleased with it. Sure, asthetically it is a bit more pleasing than the larger ones to me anyhow but I have to admit there are times, like say, on longer trips, that I'd rather have something a bit wider and a bit taller.

As often as I am in my local HD place, I have yet to actually see if the larger HD windsheilds will fit the HD quick detach brackets on my 03 LowRider.

IMHO all the HD windsheilds are well made and the QD versions are pretty cool.

I have the standard height w/ the quick release. It's not too tall for me to see over, but I can still hunch down and get my head behind it if it starts raining or such. I'm also guilty of never removing it, but I imagine that once I make it someplace that I can cruise the boulevard (Sturgis or something similar) I know I can remove it. The only thing that bothers me is that someone can decide they want one but don't want to shell out the $$$$ and take mine. I don't suppose anyone has thought of a way to secure it and still retain the easy off capability?

Have the quick release on mine, standard height. I like it and find that I ride with it more than without, but every once in a while...it feels good to have the wind in my face and the bugs in my teeth.

Hey, thats a good point.......as secure as I try to keep my ride I never thought about some [&&^%$$#@%$] long term borrowing my windsheild.

There should be a way to secure em'.....let me know if you would if you come up with anything.

Thank you all for you input. the standard size seems to be the choice, I think the compact looks a little nicer on the eyes but if it is not functional then why buy it right?

Thanks again

I got to tell ya, everytime I scroll past your bike I just got to stop and admire, mann that bike is sweet looking. What model windshield is that you have on there now? it look nice and streamline. is it the sport one? and is that the new compact one? I really like the look of it compared to the "new" ones they offer that are much fatter.

thanks

Harpoon

PS you wouldn't happen to have any pic of your bike from the front with the windshield on would ya?

I bought my '03 FXDWG used and it came with a full-sized removeable windshield. It was exactly eye level and split my vision dangerously, so I never used it. Replacement HD shield were $$$... but a fine tooth blade for my jig saw was cheap. I cut about 2 inches off of it then shaped the edges with a belt sander and smoothed it up with the ol' corner cat.

I figured I didn't have anything to loose since I wasn't using it anyway. Works fine now and helps keep the cold off the chest.
