I have a new to me 07 street bob. I have had it for about 3 months and today while riding it started to sputter, and backfire and then stalled. I pulled over and while doing so the gauges were jumping around and then died. I shut the key off and feared the worst but when I turned it on the fuel pump pressurized and the bike fired right up. I rode it home with no other problems other than the fuel gauge on the left side of the tank now does not work. Anyone have any ideas? Thank you in advance for your help.
Welcome from West MI, check your battery connections. If you go on short rides, you will usually get a "surface" charge. Get a smart tender, it should have a pigtail to go on the battery and give it a good charge. I use Deltran smart chargers, got mine at a battery plus store.
Aftermarket handlebars? Could be an intermittent short if you have internally wired bars. Happened to mine when I changed bars a few years back, same exact symptoms.
Thank you, Most of my rides are 25 miles or more. I put a charger on it for about 4 hours this morning and took it for a ride around town. I made it to the gas station filled up and when headed back past my neighborhood it did it again. Started starving for fuel and back firing and then shut off. The gauges went blank this time and then after about 5 seconds came back on and the fuel pump turned back on. When I tried to start it up it all went dead. I pushed the bike back to my house and let it sit for about 3 hours. I turned on the key and it had some power but was really weak. So I put the charger back on it and it and the lights and fuel pump turned on at full power. Would not turn over though just clicking.
I think I have narrowed it down to a bad battery or possibly the bike not charging the battery when running. The voltage gauge was at 14 volt when riding though so I think its the battery. Still trying to figure out what happened to the fuel gauge though. It still is not working. Possibly a power surge when the battery cell went bad got it.
