About 8 months ago I had to replace bearings. Put some Japanese generic ones on. Barely rode the bike but atleast took it out once a week for really short rides. About 2 months later bearings failed again, put tinken brand and now about 3 months after I’m getting the same problem. It’s like if water gets in and rusts out the bearing.
I’m about to buy a new set. Suggestions between: HD and Drag Speciality (which comes as a complete set and has a seal that might protect the bearings)
Open ti suggestions
i have no clue if my bike is missing a seal. It doesn’t seem like it.
There are no seals, just rather inadequate dust covers (aka, washers).
The set I just removed from my 99 looked nearly new and were original with 65k miles on them.
So, when you pull the bearings they are seized with rust? In 8 months?
If so, like cvaria said, consider your grease type and application. Also, avoid pressure washers in the neck area (and any other seal/vent/intake/exhaust/electrical connector area)
How are you removing and installing the bearings?
How are you adjusting preload/fallaway?

Original bearings were a bit deformed. first replacemnt was done because i heard a click when breaking and steering got little stuck while turning, felt like someone hlding the handle bars. they where rusted.
they where removed really rudimentarily with a hammer and a driver. put back on with a hammer and the old bearing as support, guide or what ever you want to call it.
the guy adjusted it by tightening fully then loosend 1/4 turn. it was ok to steer
