What’s your opinion on engine guards? I’m looking into getting one. Mustache or original style? Any difference in my the lower mount? I see some bolt to where the foward controls would mount (ok with me) or some mount with U bolts. This is for my 09 Superglide
I have the mustache and I love it. Nice to have a place to throw a foot up to change position. I haven't yet tested how well it helps if you drop the bike, but I feel better knowing it's there, just in case.
You should have one,, no matter the style
09 FXD, HD Engine guard, got it here on the classifieds from another member $70 shipping included.
This is top bolt / lower U-clamp,, easy install.
Knowing what can happen if/when in a frontal collision, I can not recommend any "engine guard bars" that stick out enough to pin legs if they are bent back during a crash.
Other "engine guard bars" that hug the engine are different.

Think about this risk...
Very profound!
But,,
Which "engine guard bars" do pin the legs during frontal crashes,,
,and which ones "do not"?
Got a list? Or are we supposed to just avoid certain kinds of frontal crashes that would make our individual choice of engine guard bars to pin our legs?
What if,? (and I mean what if ?)
I guy had a kind of engine guard bar that does pin legs during frontal crashes, knows he has engine guard bar that will pin legs during frontal crashes,, and he moves his leg's before the engine guard bar folds to pin his leg during a frontal crash?
Does that count as an engine guard bars that pins legs really don't?
Or is it really a myth,, that engine guards pin legs during frontal crashes?
classic olde school argument,, "don't use crash bars!!, Your leg will get stuck!!"

Nice extrapolation, there. I like it.
Unfortunately, during certain angles of frontal energy, yes, they can "pin" legs. Or, shear them.
Does it happen all the time? Probably not. A broke clock is right twice a day. (And, we always know precisely at what time!)
I'm just passing along some info to people that may not have thought about it.
"move legs before the bars come back..." that's funny right there. Sure hope no one else finds out the hard way. It ain't purdy when it does...
