Default 06 Super Glide questions

Considering trading my 07 1200 Sportster for an 06 Super Glide. The appeal to me would be (hopefully) a better highway bike for longer distances. Am I right in assuming it would be a better long distance runner?

Things to look out for on this model/engine? It's got a lot of miles on it. Mine does not.
In the scheme of things, was this bike considered a solid build for it's time?

Thanks for any insights.

With 2006 Dyna it seems you need to think about rotor (stator), inner primary bearing and possibly the compensator. I've replaced all of them through the years. Rotor and stator left me stranded and is a ticking time bomb unless they removed and had bolts welded or upgraded to an 06B or 07 part number. Just ask about it and find out if its been looked at.

Definately not a new question. Both great bikes with many options to configure to your liking. People travel long distances on Sportsters as well as on Dyna's. With that said if you plan to long distance tour then I would suggest you include a Touring class model in your review.

Having ridden a Sportster and now currently have a Dyna, I would say that the Dyna is somewhat more comfortable for me on longer rides. Considering how many low mileage used Dynas are on the market I think you should be looking for at least an 07. Besides the issues listed above, remember that the 06 is kind of a hybrid- while it got the 6 speed gearbox, the motor is an 88". In 07 they went with the 96".

Great info. THANKS. Not going further with the trade discussion for the reason above. That's what I needed to know.

Buy as new as you can. I wouldn’t touch a 2006 if you paid me. Every one I know who HAD an 06 had problems with it.

if you can get a 2012 or newer you get updated tensioners and updated wiring etc....

Have ridden 7 straight hrs stopping for gas and other. Doable. Much better than the Sporty , and the they're other mods too.

I have one of each
2003 1200 Sportster XLC- Did me good, but is now a buddy bike and I think I might sell it.

2006 Dyna Super Glide Custom- Love this bike. I would never go back to a sporty again. Smoother, Faster and can ride them for hours without getting off and feeling vibrated for hours afterwards.

In 2014 I bought my 2006 Dyna without knowing of its inherent issues. I got it for a good price. It's been a good bike. I got it in 2014. It has a 2007 stator. If (when) it breaks I'll fix it; hopefully it's not too difficult to fix (replace) an IPB.
