the post title says it all. I’m looking for advice for on purchasing a mechanics tool set, metric & SAE. I’m on a budget ($500 USD Max), thanks in advance.
what ever you do get some good torque wrenches...........but for the rest........you can go the cheapo route and get tons of tools at Harborfreight or go with the BIG names such as SNAPON and MATCO.....
Myself I like Craftsman but their quality is going down hill and their lifetime warranty is questionable at some places outside of SEARS.......even LOWES is carrying them now.....
AND make sure you get the Factory Service Manual.........from Harley....pays for itself in spades!!!
believe it or not, the cobalt stuff is pretty good quality or klutch. i have absolutely beat my cobalt tools to death and they just keep on trucking. i recently grabbed some new klutch tools and they are almost identical to snapon. i gave up on harbor freight. got tired of breaking **** or stripping out screws from poor quality heads.
I’ve got the service manuals for both of my bikes (Harley-Davidson & GSXR 750) and 1 Torque Wrench. I was looking at Harbor Frieght’s 301 piece Master Mechanics tools set but I’m leery of the quality.
A set of Craftsman tools are available from a lot of places, as already stated, for a very reasonable cost. My 250 piece set, with metric & standard, was less than $150.00. If they break they can be returned to Sears, no questions asked; some of them are exchanged right away, while others are replaced through the mail; and that is for as long as you own them. Both of my torque wrenches (inch pounds & foot pounds) came from Harbor Freight and have lasted 20 years so far (I have followed the owners manuals as for their care and maintenance). (precision tools require precision care JMHO)
