Hey i need some advice quickly . It time for 1000 mile service. Can i buy a service manual and do it myself. there is the warranty question. Will warranty be honored if i had receipts showing i bought everything needed to do it. But i am thinking since its the firist one maybe i should let dealer do it. they getting 250.00 to do it.Icould do for a lot less. Any opinions
Buy the book, the fluids and some tools and save some $$$$$$$$. If you can follow the book and handle a wrench it's not too hard for a first timer
Also you can purchase the DVD (Fix My Hog) Soft Tail Edition this will show and walk you through the service of your new bike.
just my .02 worth

So, there are a few schools of thought on this...but to answer the first portion of your question: yes you can do it (assuming you have a big of wrenching skill and the tools needed) and the service manual should be purchased even if you don't do the 1K service.
As to the warranty, I think that if you just document everything you will be ok...
Then, you could have them do it, some say "why spend the $$$ on the bike then get cheap on the service"
I personally do all of my own service, but that's mostly because I have had the HD stealers jack up more than they fix, keep it longer than quoted or just not get it all back together the right way...so...I pretty much only trust my bike with myself ;-)
I did most of this myself this weekend. it's not difficult and like Thrillseeker said, it's good to get to know your bike. I still have to change the primary fluid and go buy a torque wrench today to finish it off, but it's a piece of cake for the most part. And i figure for what the dealer is charging, i'll have saved a ton of money and probably be a lot more thorough than they would have been. the service manual was a great investment.
Always serviced my used bikes. Guys here are more than willing to help if you get in a bind.Saved over $300 on my first service. Not hard, just time consuming if you do it right and have all the right tools. Now I know alot more about my bike.
