Neutral problems
I have a 98 dyna wide glide with 24000 miles on it. I started having problems with trying to find neutral and also the bike slipping into neutral when shifting in to 3rd. I have adjusted the clutch several times changing the amount that i back the screw out. I noticed that if i moved the bike backward that i could find neutral easier. I decided to tighten the chain and that seemed to help initially and then took it for a ride yesterday and again stopped for gas could not find neutral and bike slipped from 3rd into neutral a couple of times during ride. I took the bike to harley dealership and because the bike is too old they wont work on it . I had a tech come and check to see if the pawl adjustment could be the problem but they could not tell without the measuring tool they use, told me to back nut 1/2 turn out on clutch but that did not help. I do not have the special tool to do the pawl adjustment and not really sure if this could be the culprit and was wondering if anybody might of had this problem....Thanks
Are there any indy shops that can help you out. It's a sad state of affairs that HD has adopted that philosophy that the bikes are too old. Maybe the techs are not that bright that they can't troubleshoot without a scan tool.I think there is a video on youtube on how to adjust the shifter pawl.
Yes, it does sound like an adjustment issue. Although, finding a "false neutral" from 3rd is disconcerting. Does it go into "false neutral when off the gas and slowing down with the clutch out? If so, then a bent shift fork is usually the culprit. Hope it's not that.
