I've posted this in two other sections and have not received any help, so hopefully someone here will see it and know what the problem is.
I'm having a problem when pulling to a stop, if I try to get two gears with the clutch pulled in the shifter gets stuck in a "state of limbo". After I downshift one gear the shift lever then gets stuck and I can lift it up and push it down but nothing happens, I have to release the clutch level then pull the lever in again in order to downshift or up shift again. This is happening while I'm pulling to a stop and still moving, not when stationary. What could be causing this?
Are you down shifting AS you stop, or after you've stopped?
If AFTER you've stopped then try 'playing' out the clutch a little as you work the shifter with your foot.
Also try down shiffting one gear at a time & letting the clutch out completly as you approch the stop to see what happens.
I feel like I'm telling you how to ride... sorry.
What about the clutch adjustment?
How many miles are on it?
I've ran full syn in mine for 30,000 miles with no problems...
If it's still under warranty... take it in.
the linkage for the forward control is freezing up.
the the shifter off and the splined shaft out.
clean all the rust and dirt out and lube it up with anti seize.
you'll be as good as new.
I am experiencing the exact same problem with my 07' Heritage. I really appreciate the question and the help that HDTech74 dropped on us. My heritage will go easily to second as I downshift steadily approaching a stop, but as I tap down expecting to get that familiar clunk into first, I sometimes get a rubbery "dead" shifter.
a clutch that is out of adjustment will make it hard to find neutral as well.
5707, on my 05 night train, i had the linkage stick a number of times.
After taking it apart and coating the splined shaft with a liberal helping of
anti seize it never happened again.
Great help, thanks. I adjusted my clutchpack a few weeks ago and it has performed very well for approximately 700 miles (I ride alot). Just last night it started to get annoying, and tonight at just too many stops. Can my cable adjustment be at fault in any way? My inclination is no. The lever has the width of a penny of "play" until there is tension. I think that is good, and it seems to shift-out flawlessly.
I will go after the linkage and shifter trunion tomorrow on your advise of earlier. I think I understand what you are saying. Thanks again!
when you adjust the clutch, do you just adjust the cable or adjust it under the derby cover as well?
I usually run about you're running for freeplay on the clutch cable.
I say take the trunion as you call it out, clean and lube it all up, put it back together, and I think you're good.
