I have a 2002 FXDWG and I am only averaging 30-34 mpg. I have never got over 34 except for way up in elevation I got 36. TC 88 with D&D 2-1 performance baffle. Also a SE 204 cam if I'm remembering correctly. This seems pretty low to me, I ride an even amount of highway and town. Roughly 300 miles a week. The cam was put in by the dealership and it was tuned via the dyno. I feel like there is still room for improvement based on my mpg and the cough I get on my carb. From what I understand a cough is normal though. Any feedback would be great.
Did they provide you with a dyno sheet that includes AFRs? If yes, post up so others can review and provide you with a better response.
Unfortunately no they did not. To get a personal "full report" I'd have to pay the extra hourly rate. Besides those two issues, I can't really say I am having loss of power or any other carb issue. But I have never ridden another 88 so I have no comparison.
If the "cough" is from the carb when starting from a stop, that's usually indicating a lean condition. I put two #4 brass washers on the main needle in the vacuum piston/slide. The needle has a slight taper and the washers help get the needle off the taper sooner. I haven't changed any jets, just richened up the idle mix a little. I usually got 38-40 mpg combined and 48-50 on the highway, this is all in line as to how much I twisted the throttle or held my rpm's up for shifting. 02 FXD 95" with S/E 204 cams and open intake and exhaust.
Do you get popping noises on deceleration? Does the exhaust gurgle at idle? If so you may need a smaller pilot jet.

That is what I am thinking that the bike may be running lean. I just figured I'd be able to pull 35-40 mpg with an 88. Might look into the jets this weekend.
Only pops on hard deceleration. It is not very loud popping but it isn't just a rumble either. When you say gurgle what do you mean??
The cough from accelerating from a stop would be the main jet though. You may need a larger main jet for accelerating but a smaller pilot jet to get better mileage at cruise. The gurgle would be at the exhaust and what sounds a lot like when people gurgle mouthwash.
