If the 2001 is all stock and has the fairing and saddlebags, and everything is in good condition, that would nudge me towards that bike. If the 2001 is missing that stuff, or is in poor condition, the 2016 would be better. Either way, you want to take the bike to a good indy and have them throughly check out the bike.

This is really hard. Ultimately I think it comes down to cost, condition, upgrades, and mileage.
You probably already know, but:
FXDXT- Carbed, 5 speed, 88” motor, mags, dual disc brakes, fairing, bags, highway pegs, adjustable sport suspension, 39mm forks, skinnier tires.
FXDB: EFI, 6 speed, 103” motor, spikes, single disc brake, no fairing, no bags, no highway pegs, standard fork springs, 49mm forks, wider tires.
I’ve had FXDXs, FXDXTs and FXDPs...all the same. Fun bikes, light, nimble, comfy. A pristine one usually fetches a pretty penny, but there’s deals out there. That being said, a 2001 is going on 19 years old. Even “pristine” is going to have 19 years of dry rot on the rubber pieces. No matter what, it’ll need some attention to some simple and or major maintenance pieces. Although only an 88”, you can do some simple upgrades to release the power in these things. Personally, I prefer the gearing of the 5 speeds.
On the other hand, the FXDB can be made into an “FXDXT” pretty easily. Swap out for mags and add another caliper and rotor for dis discs. Get whatever bags you want and get an aftermarket fairing and you’ve got the same appearance and creature comforts. As far as the power plant, you’re starting with s decent 103”, which again can be opened up pretty easily.
I’d say ride both. The ergonomics are slightly different on both but a Dyna is a Dyna. They all get customized and fitted with different seats, bars, pegs/floorboards to make your riding position what you want it.
If it were me, and there were both of these bikes with the same miles for the same price I’d opt for the FXDXT just because it’s kind of a unicorn and is still “pure Harley” to me. The newer bikes seem to be more and more like cars but that’s just me.
Happy hunting!

Piggybacking in my own rant: I’m assuming a 2016 FXDB goes for like $14k?
Repop Tsport fairing: $500-$800
Highway Pegs: $200
Leather Pros FXDXT bags: $700
Mags: no idea...$500 on eBay maybe?!
Master Cylinder: $100 eBay?
Right Fork Lower: $200?
Dual Brake Lines: $120?
Rotor: $100
All that stuff to make the FXDB into an FXDXT on top of the price of admission.
BUT to turn an 88” into a 103” would be the same type of money or more. But a 95” kit with some head work would have you smoking the stage 1 guys with a 103”.

Such great feedback! Y’all just made it more difficult to choose hahaha but yes I think it’s more of how much I’m gonna spend.
but honestly I’ve always loved the fxdxt because it’s really a GEM but for my two choices the bikes both are honestly priced around the same, which to me is a very difficult situation because the fxdxt comes all original with very low mileage and it’s really tempting like finding a diamond. But the FXDB comes already with a stage 1 setup with low mileage as well but like anything id still be spending on that fxdxt look for fairings, bags, and etc to make it comfortable for me. Whereas the fxdxt probably just do some motor work to make her boogie, so the cost of both honestly would come out nearly the same hahaha damn!

I’ve always said this, buy as new as you can w/the lowest miles you can at the cheapest price you can. To anyone other then a few dyna experts out there, the FXDXT is just another sportster oops meen dyna....get what I’m saying? It’s nothing special but a 18 yr old bike. Most people today probably couldn’t tell the difference between the models.
Dont get me wrong it’s a great bike but if the price is the same, buy the 2016.
