Default 88 FXRS Electrical Problem

Here's the Story...
We were riding along, and the engine died. No problems before this, it just died. There was no battery power, and the lights were blown out. Tried another battery. Engine turns over, but no fire. Any suggestions?

Check the main breaker, there were some bad ones back inthe early years of the FXR's. There was a recall on them also

Ok,
Now for the next question:
Where is the main breaker?
And, How would that affect the lights burning out?

It should tell you in your manual. I would look under the seat myself

The lights went out, or burnt out? If they went out, then that circuit runs through the main breaker.

That's why I said breaker, because you said that there was NO battery power.

Actually, the lights burned out. I tried a new battery after it died, and that's when I discovered the
lights had burned out. Engine would turn over, but no spark.

You might look under the left side cover. I know there is some electrical stuff under both side covers on my '86, but I think it may be on the left side.

GOT it!
The whole problem started with the battery being dead, found the breakers, replaced one, and repaired a short.
You all helped a great deal, Thanks!

Just in case anybody's interested. This whole electrical problem turned out to be a bad regulator. The short may have contributed, but when I finally checked the voltage output, the max was 17 volts. Apparently there is a problem with this year and regulators. New one = no more problem.
