Hey guys, Im installing lucky Daves San Diego bars and new magnum shielding cables on my Fxdls. Any input and which steps to do first is seriously appreciated as this is my first bar swap. Harley quoted me 1200$ just for labor and I feel like thats extremly high.. so once again any advice is much appreciated. Thanks guys!
Start by taking the switch housings apart, then you can loosen up your clutch tension adjuster which will allow you to remove the end from the lever/housing. I took out the front tank mount and drained the fuel from the rubber crossover tube, that way you can slide the tank up and out of ur way a little more but I think you can get by without it. You’re basically going to pull the grommet out of the frame neck and start pulling gently on the wires that come from the bars. All of them will pull out until you find the connectors. You disconnect those, unbolt bars, and start stripping the bars pulling the wiring thru out the top by the grips. You’ll also need to pull the transmission side cover and remove the other end of the clutch cable. Install new cable, run all the wiring thru your new bars the same way you took it out of the old ones and reassemble. It’s pretty straight forward once you get going. For the brake lines just disconnect your battery, crack the lines loose at the calipers, drain, remove, replace, and bleed with new fluid. Just make sure you don’t turn the key on or anything before you’re all bled, otherwise you’ll suck air into the ABS and have to have the dealer bleed that. I’m sure I’ve missed a few things but there’s videos online for some of the stuff if you get stuck. One thing I had to do that not everyone does is taking some of the bigger connectors off so I had an easier time running the wires thru the bars. There’s info on how to do that just google depinning hd electical plugs and keep track of which wire goes in which hole. All you need for that is a decent sewing needle or small pick. Just take your time, know it’ll take a full day maybe two depending how mechanically inclines you are. I spent the better part of the weekend on my first bike and this second one was much quicker. Last thing, I found small gauge chain to work best to fish wires thru, you can get it at the hardware store and it slides thru easily if you use gravity to help. Good luck hope this helps
As someone whos had to do this a couple times on my lrs Id highly suggest you depin the connectors and I even rubbed a small amount of Vaseline on my harnesses because my apes have 90s. Id agree with everything in the previous post but one thing I would add is to tape off the holes in the bars on the opposite side, then use a shop vac or similar to suck twine through the bars. Then use that to help pull the wires through It saved me so much time.
And again as stated in the previous post, make absolutely certain you dont turn the ignition on til the brakes are bled. Just disconnect the battery and bleed the brakes as soon as its reassembled. Good luck, you got this.

do I need to bleed the rear breaks if I only replaced the front lines?
Strobes48: Just curious: did you have to de-pin your connectors to get them in/out of the 2 bars? I've got a 2012 SB. A guy told me he didn't have to on his 14, but had to do it on a 2009? Did Harley change the connector sizes or something?
