I guess this is just one of those HD mysteries... The microfiche clearly shows my bike as using p/n 7554, as it does for the OP's bike... But yet we both have 1/2"-20 thread on the stud/acorn. And at least in my case, everything appears to be undisturbed since new...
I can't help wondering about the difference between 54557-90A and 54627-00... I'm assuming it's length. But I wonder whether the thread is different as well. Maybe there were specific acorns for each of these studs, but an error was made in the parts books when they were all listed as the same.
I checked. Mine are also 1/2-20. The acorns I got from Alloyboltz are 1/2-13. Sorry for the confusion.
Interesting. I suspect something's inaccurate in the HD parts book. It lists two different part numbers for the stud, but only one for the acorn. It seems there were two... I sent a note to AlloyBolts about it, and here's what I got back:
"I don't stock a 1/2-20 Acorn. The stock Upper stud for the Harley Dyna uses a 1/2-13 acorn for the Outer Nut. I'm not sure why you have a 1/2-20? Did the stud get reversed? The portion of the stud that goes through the frame and fender Strut is a 1/2-20."
I'll double check tomorrow, but I think my studs are 1/2-20 on both sides. I bet that's the difference between the two stud part numbers.
So that's three of us on this thread... I really think there's an error in the books. I've reinstalled the OEM locking acorns as well, at least for now.
What a wild thread hahah...I thought this would be a “it’s this size, bye” one comment thread.
I picked my FXDXI up at about the 10k mile mark and it too was undisturbed with all shocks, studs and bolts in the original position. Must just be an error in thy HD manual, or a glitch in The Matrix.
