I’ve got my eye on an absolutely mint FXDXT that is located in Massachusetts. I am in California. The bike has 3000 miles on it.
I've searched high and low on the googles and can’t find a straight answer. What year did Harley start making 50 state compliant bikes? I have the VIN, can I find out if it is 50 state compliant? Being that the bike is (almost) 19 years old does the 7500 mile rule still apply? Am I completely screwed at the moment when it comes to registering the bike in CA for now?
i'm familiar with getting bikes and cars from outside of CA into CA, i live in san jose area. the bike has to be california compliant, it will have a sticker on the downtube that says as such. then there is the charcoal canister. What year is the bike you're looking at? I have a 2017 bike and it has to be CA specific, trust me i could have gotten a bike out of state and it would have been thousands cheaper but it wasn't possible. I'm fairly certain that if the bike was originally sold outside of california that it isn't california compliant.
the 7500 mile rule isn't really a rule, i've registered bikes with less miles in CA from out of state before without issue. I did have to take off the gas tank so they could see the CA emissions sticker though.

I think the fact you state its 19 years old means the regulations wont apply so you should be ok.
Yeah there’s a cutoff year for CA compliant. They don’t check exhaust or charcoal canisters or anything...literally odometer reading and make sure VIN matches motor to the frame.
When I bought my TSport from my friend in Nevada, I did the registration transfer at AAA and they didn't even ask for the odometer reading due to the age...
This is a copy and paste from the link based on exceptions, you still need the sticker:
A street motorcycle or motor-driven cycle year model 2005 and older, with an engine less than 50 cubic centimeters (cc) displacement. Beginning January 1, 2006, street motorcycles and motor-driven cycles year model 2006 and newer, with engines less than 50 cc displacement, require an emission label certifying them to meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emission regulations, and may be registered regardless of mileage.
I just had to do a VIN verification for a 1972 Ford. It still required the California Emissions Sticker...
There are places that do mobile verifications that could save you trouble. I agree with the other poster they won't check for the actual pieces that make up the emissions but they'll want to see the sticker, b/c on the sticker is a code that they need to write down when doing the VIN verification.
There are creative ways around it, it just depends what or if the hassle is worth it for you is all.
AAA is a great place and it's possible they could just take it if it's in their system. I've situations where it wasn't so i had to go through the DMV.

Did you end up getting that bike?
I have also been looking all over for 01-02 or 04-05 fxdx/fxdxt.
If you did get it, are you satisfied? Anything i should look out for?
