I was writing a reply to this because I'm having the same error on my 2011 Fat Bob, until I realized that my information may not apply because mine doesn't have CAN Bus, and yours may have that. Your error sounds like mine but according to what I was able to find, 2011 and 2012 Dynas have different setups for this. Short of seeing the manuals for a 2012, the best reference I could find was that the Fuel Moto website gives the Power Vision PV-1 for my 2011, and the Power Vision PV-2 for your 2012 in their fitment checker. The Dynojet webpage for the PV2 shows that it's the one for CAN Bus systems. If anyone knows how to tell which system you have for sure by looking at something on the bike that would really help here. I'm sure the manuals show it but it would be nice to have something to tell people to check for. I suspect that one of these is true: either your Fat Bob isn't CAN Bus despite being a 2012 because you're in the UK and that affects it somehow, or that the new system is so similar to the old one that the error still points in the same general direction. The question has been asked in many threads that I found, and the consensus from those is that CAN Bus starts in 2011 for Softails and 2012 for Dynas.
I'll hold off on most of what I was going to say in case it's wrong until we can find out if you have CAN bus. But for now here's what I can add from my electrical diagnostic manual that I was lucky to find on eBay recently. I'd really rather just copy a bunch of this into my post but I'm not sure what the forum rules are for that.
"BUS Er" is how they spell it in the manual, and seems to mean Bus Error. In computering a bus is how individual sub-components talk to one another over data lines. A poster on here somewhere referred to it as the local network, or ethernet network within the bike that lets all the (digital) components communicate and share data. The terminology relates to an electrical busbar, and reminds me of the first divisions of a tree, the biggest branches.
The CAN Bus is the newer version of what I have on mine, which doesn't seem to be named. My error appeared after I (hastily and poorly) installed my Power Vision with True-Tune, but I suspect it has to do with my turn signal module. This thread shows the same U1301 DTC that I have on my Power Vision. I get the same BUS Er on my odometer that you describe every time I turn the bike on. The U1301 is the DTC that I can easily find by using the Power Vision. You can find if there is a DTC on yours by checking it for codes, and tell us what you find. I also really recommend the Electronic Diagnostic Manual for your bike if you can find it; I'm very glad to have mine. U1301 is the very last DTC in the list of them.
Again I don't know if this applies to your bike or not, but for now here's the relevant part for me in section 2-18 of my manual, under the section called "DTC U1300, U1301 OR BUS ER":

Early computer buses were bundles of wire that attached computer memory and peripherals. Anecdotally termed the "digit trunk",[4] they were named after electrical power buses, or busbars.

If serial data is shorted, these DTCs will automatically cause the check engine lamp to illuminate. The odometer will read "BUS Er" in this condition.

With any weird electrical problems my first response is check your grounds. Both ends of the battery cable need to be removed and cleaned. There are some other ground straps on your bike, they need to be removed, cleaned and re tightened.
Thanks for all your input, I will check all earths again, the only visible mod on this bike is a directional indicators relocation, wires chopped just below handlebar instrument ends and relocated to brackets on forks, I'm going to spend the winter months unwrapping and checking the wiring on this as it is always coupled with losing my rt hand signal and hazards when it will not even try to start by turning the engine, this together with the start button all being on the rt handlebar instruments seems very suspect ,.
I will try to get the codes up and report them back
