Default Oil return question

I am re plumbing the oil tank on my 86 fxr using all an fittings and hose. I have routed my vent internally to the top of the tank. Does the return oil to the tank have to go to the top of the tank or can it return to the tank below oil level? Will this cause the oil to drain back into the engine when sitting?

The return oil should enter the tank above the level of the oil.

I looked at the EVO and others with the lines and they are all similar enough. Most all my pictures showed the lines coming up and then disappearing behind and you only see two coming in/out the top. My TC was the same design but a lot clearer.

As Dan Says, you want the return line to have a standoff inside the tank so that oil cannot flow back down it.
