After doing a lot of searching, I've seen several very old threads on this topic, but none very recent so figured I'd open one up. I have a 2015 Fat Bob and have really been digging the mods I've seen a few folks to where they put a sportster-style take on their dyna like these:
I know a couple of those did some serious fabrication work to essentially re-fabricate the tunnel on a sportster tank to fit the square dyna backbone. Has anyone seen a tank this style that wouldn't require serious fabrication to fit a dyna?
Ive been down this rabbit hole a couple times too, and youre right, all the threads and info is pretty old. Basically gotta go custom.
The ONLY benefit is looks (which is in the eye of the beholder anyway), but if youre going for that chopper look, might as well get an older bike to turn into a chopper anyway. The King Sporty tanks mount up to FXRs, Id youre going for the cool-guy performance look. I cant really picture the tiny peanut tank with Fat Bob wheels, but Ive been surprised before.
It is funny that you bring this up. Ive actually been thinking about the new Softail Street Bob gas tank which is 3.5 gallons, and how much work that would be to put on our Dynas.
Roland Sands has done it a few times on Softails and sold the tank years ago. Zero Engineering also sold an aluminum Sportster tank for the big twin. I think it can look great, allows the engine to dominate instead of the giant tank. But, the aftermarket tanks were very expensive, as any hand crafted piece would be compared to mass-produced Chinese stuff. Strictly for the higher end builder who can pay to tie a major styling change together
