So i installed a air ride on my bike and let me tell you it is AMAZING!!! i took my old shocks off and put them on my brothers Sporty... LOOOKS SICK but rides like a hardtail now, How do i adjust them to make them softer. I see all those holes on the bottom of the shock and want to make sure they are both the same setting, thanks for helping this idiot out!
My lowrider has numbers associated with certain holes. 1-5 IIRC. 1 being softest, 5 being stiffest. I just tried to stiffen mine up from 2 tonite with the HD tool, and it boogered up one of the holes, so I'll look again, maybe I'm an idiot, but that's the way I see they are adjusted as well. I'm currently looking for a spanner that has a round pin instead of a square pin to go in a round hole. So, DON"T adjust anything yet!!
Yeah, I'll probably try that next. It was getting dark and hot in the garage this evening, so when things went wrong, I decided to step away for awhile and get some advice here. Good thing too, now I've got a direction to go again in the morning. THANKS!!
Ok, that's what I did. Took a file to the edges and rounded them off. The spanner now has a nice continuous radius that matches the radius on the shock. Tried it out, works like a champ! I did put a piece of tape on the flat area that touches the shock to prevent scratching tho. Thanks again for the advice. Carry on!!
A different option is to buy a belt wrench (Sears and other places). They wrap around anything you want turned. Especially nice for shocks as the rubber belt won't mar the surface. Good for plumbing connections, also.
FYI, the BMW 1100GS shock wrench fits and works perfectly. Might be helpful info when if you ever want to adjust on the road sometime... Just track down a big dual-sport beemer and ask if you can look in their toolkit!
