Less options for parts availability when things go out too when your out on the road.

p.s this thread should be moved to the shovelhead section

Sometimes the highway traffic determines the run speed. Speed limit 70 = 80mph minimum. My 03 Dyna 5spd stays with traffic fine. Im also switching to an 18inch rear, with lower profile tire, however will add 3/4inch total diameter increase. Im a backroad runner mostly though.

Vibration aside, the Shovelheads were nice riding bikes.
They weren’t geared for today’s highway speeds.
Imagine driving a 70 4 Sp Chevelle w/3.73’s
at 75-80 all day. 3500 rpm+.
But FX’s & FL’s were solid and comfortable
Plus an FX came in under 600 lbs
Even a Dyna can’t make that claim.

Generally my crusing speed is about 65mph. With a six speed I don't think I should be that worried about it.

Does the frame of an FX feel better than a dyna in your experience having the swingarm bolted to the frame?

when you say under 600lbs do you mean for customs or for a standard ride because just looking online an fxe is listed as 606lbs, which is still less than a dyna but isn't under 600 so I'm just curious by what you mean.

Thanks!

Sounds about right, My 03 FXD advertised dry weight is right about 620Lbs. So wet weight is probably about 635ish.. I have rode several bikes from now, back to the 50s.. Bobbers to baggers. They all have their own personality. I do really like the way my 03 FXD handles though.. Nimble enough for me.. It surely lets you know your on a Harley, but it wont shake your dentures out..

My 1974 FXE was originally my dad's (He bought new, Mar of 1974 - I was 13)
He was a truck driver. He weighed it up at Permanente. 594 I believe
(Because he only told me 10,000 times)

And YES !!! My 74 FXE and 84 FXS were both like they were on rails.
I rode a good friend's 95 Dyna WG a little. To me, it wasn't as stable,
BUT it had the pizza cutter front wheel and longer forks so that could
have been it. Noticeably heavier too.

wideglides were never known for handling.
a proper fxdxt would run circles around a shovel.
