Default Tachometer

I have a 2005 FXD carbureted that I want to install a Drag Specialties tach on. I know the wiring from the tack and what the wires are supposed to wire into. My question is where can I pick up the trigger wire for the coil and what color is it. The ground, power and light are no problems I just dont know what color the coil trigger wire is and is there a factory wiring plug by the frame neck or will I have to go directly to the coil. Thanks.

I have a service manual for my 2005 FXDWG that also has a wiring diagram for your FXD. There is no negative terminal at the coil, only a 12+ and front and rear plug wires. Both tach and speedo signal wire is the LG/V coming from the ECM, it's the second pin from the right on your speedometer plug. The wiring diagram shows a tachometer and plug, maybe yours has the plug capped off next to your speedometer, if not just tap into the LG/V on the speedometer. Hope this helps!

Wiring diagram here - 99949-05_en - 2005 Wiring Diagrams | Harley-Davidson SIP (harley-davidson.com)

A quick search brings up all kinds of wiring diagrams for Drag Specialties. Didn't the tacho come with instructions?

On my 04, it was the harness plugged into the speedometer. Interesting enough, I got the tac used off ebay. Did not come with the pin.

The dealership told me the pin only came in a service kit. The service wanted an hour labor to install it!? Ha Ha. It's the same pin in a 9 pin connector from old computer printer cables.

All that go around. Harley saved 5 cents by not putting the pin in the cable harness.

The tach wiring was not the problem. I was looking for what wires at the main harness at the frame neck to use. I located all but the "trigger" wire to the tach. All is good though I ended up going to the plug at the coil and tapping the G/w wire there.
