Default 2010 FXDB starter replacement

So I have never replaced a starter in either of my bikes and I’m pretty sure the Street Bob is in need of one.
When you push the button it is a hit or miss if it will start.
The best price I have found is on Ebay $145.88 with free shipping.
With all that being said- is there any tips on how to do this smoothly? I have watched a few videos on how to do it and it looks pretty straightforward.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Before ya pop for a starter, get a solenoid rebuild kit.

Or you can disassemble the solenoid and clean up the carbon/pitting from the contacts.

Could be the button, could be the relay, could be the solenoid, could be the battery connections... Figure out what the problem is before you start throwing money around.

Just because the bike doesn`t start does not mean the starter is bad, these starters are very durable, they are just common automotive starters used on a zillion vehicles...

If you buy a new starter you will be back here right after you install it, asking why the bike is still doing the same thing...

What exactly do you mean when you say it is a "Hit or miss start"?

Let us help you troubleshoot this, and you can save some money...

When I press the starter button it sounds like the bendix is really slapping. Sometimes it will spin and the bike will start and then sometimes just a slapping noise. The starter is also way louder than my 2002 FXD.
This bike belonged to my BIL and he left it to me when he passed. He put a lot of miles on it. The Speedo is broken so I don’t know the exact mileage but the last time I asked him he said it broke around 38,000 miles.

The first thing to do is remove the battery, charge it and take it to an auto parts store and have them load test it (they will do this for free).

While the battery is out clean all the battery cable connection points, don`t just check for tightness, disconnect, clean and reconnect.

Once you know the battery is fully charged and in good working condition you can start troubleshooting.

The battery was toast when I got the bike so I put in a new one. I cleaned the connections when I installed it.
