I WAS LOOKING AT MY STOCK ONES WHEN I MOUNTEDMY APES(JUST TO CHECK THEM OUT) I NOTICED THE THE BARS WERENT PARALLEL WITH THE TREES AS IF MAYBE ONE OF THE BUSHINGS ISNT AS TIGHT AS THE OTHER AND ITS TWISTED. IS THIS POSSIBLE IF THEY ARE NOT TORQUED AT THE SAME IN/LBS OR FT/LBS OR W/E IT IS?
Had the SAME problem when I installed taller risers and new poly bushings - tried everything to try to straighten out the bars: switched out bushings to originals, swapped risers side to side (they have individual domed caps), rotated one riser 180 degrees, NOTHING WORKED! Then it occurred to me to try this as the problem really exists in the handle bar clamp to riser interface:
Loosen all the riser cap(s) bolts but not completely (just enough that the bars can rotate ever so slightly) while the risers themselves are tightened to the triple tree. Turn wheel all the way to the stop in the direction you need to move the risers to straighten them. Then push on the handle bars in the direction that will straighten the bars while pulling on the other side of the bars. Now, as the bars become straight (and they will !!!), re-tighten the cap bolts (a little tricky in that a third hand is really helpful, but can be done with a bit of contortion by yourself). Just be careful to maintain the angle of the bars you desire relative to the forks, holding the bars down low helps. Worked like a charm for me.
When I went to the local Harley dealer to get some bushings, they recommended Gooden-Tight poly bushings for $35 instead of the Harley ones. There were two styles of these and I got Part #06020005 for my '07 bob (and most all later model harleys).
For those wondering why put poly bushings on, just try pushing/pulling your handle bars front to back (with any bars, not just apes) - with stock bushings you get a reasonable amount of movement/deflection. Poly bushings cure this resulting in little or no deflection. Downside is that you get more vibration up thru the bars, but this varies a lot depending on the grips you are using.
Now when I take my hands off the bars at a stop in neutral, the bars really dance - kinda cool!!
I just went to my local stealer to get the poly bushings ($35). They are listed as fitting all Dynas EXCEPT the Street Bob. Why is that???
I just installed the Harley poly kit on my 06 Streetbob. The directions say it fits all Dynas. You discard the old bushings and the cup washers. The new bushings have flat chrome covers. The top ones fit flush with the top of the tree and the bottom ones extend down about an eighth. Everything seems ok although the new cup washers don't extend out like the originals.I don't believe you could beat them out with a hammer once they're bolted up. You might as well spring for the chrome bolts for eight bucks from Harley.I couldn't find the chrome two and threequarter bolts at Ace where I usually get my bolts and the stainless allen bolts they havewere four bucks apiece and only came in three inch.
i work with injected and casted PU when i make skateboards. i can offer the material in different durometer settings and i would be interested to help out...
I got these on ebay and I have to say they make a worldof difference on my bob. I had so much movement with the rubber ones that when I went over a crack in the road my front end mover no matter how hard I tried to keeo it from moving put these on and wow what a difference it feels better and I have more control ove the front of the bike now.
