Default Clutch Basket Stuck

Tearing down the primary on my '17 FXDB and the clutch basket won't come off the shaft. it moves just a hair in and out but that's it. i've done this tear down on the bike before and it just slid off. I saw some forum posts about prying with a prybar and hitting the shaft with a hammer...both things i really don't want to do.

Ideas?

If it moves a hair then stops, there's probably a burr on the end of the shaft. Prying the basket up and tapping on the shaft might be just what it needs. The trick is to use the pry bar to take up all the clearance in one direction, then tap the shaft back into the space created. Otherwise, maybe you could use a gear puller on it.

Thanks for that suggestion, i was able to get a prybar pretty close to the shaft behind the starter gear, pry gently, rotate and repeat until i finally got it off. Outside of a few nicks on the inside of the inner cover everything looks fine.

Thanks again!

I use red loctite on my splines for the basket.. The slightest lose fit can cause issues down the road.. And I always use a puller...
