Bought a 2007 FXD with 26000 miles almost a year ago for $4500 - my first Harley-Davidson. It came with an HD quick release windshield, HD bags, HD luggage rack, Mustang saddle and 2 into 1 V&H pipes and Fuelpak tuner.
The only major item it needed was a rear tire, but it did and does need some TLC, which I'll write about in coming posts.
I was somewhat skeptical about the price (the seller was moving out of state and was "wanted to get back into dirt bikes again"), but the test ride was okay and after a few hundred miles, it seems, at least for now, like I got a decent deal.
Besides the new tire, I immediately changed the oil in all three holes (the oil and plugs were clear), purged the brake lines, installed new brake pads, spark plugs and a Sunpie headlight.
The throttle is crisp, the shifting is smooth and although I have not checked the chain tensioner directly, (wasn't aware of potential problems), I hear nothing abnormal from the primary or compensator.
My 64 year old bones are still getting used to the mid-controls, but when I park it, I can't wait to ride again, which is a feeling I haven't enjoyed for a long time.
If you're talking about the cam chain tensioner, you should be fine since the '06 and newer Dynas got the improved hydraulic tensioners. If you're talking about the primary chain, it's automatically self adjusting.
The OEM primary chain adjuster is CRAP. It ratchets tighter and tighter till it it too tight. That causes clutch hub bearing problems. Get a HAYDEN adjuster. Got over 105,000 on my 07 FXDB with a Hayden adjuster on it with NO PROBLEMS.

I meant the primary chain, although I did see a post with a warning that said the cam tensioner can be problematic should NOT be ignored.

Yes. From what I have seen on the forum, the consensus is that the OEM should be replaced. Thanks for the suggestion on the Hayden.
