I am looking at a 2012 Super Glide. However the exhaust discoloration has me a bit concerned. The guy put an air cleaner on it as you can see. Stock pipes. No fuel controller. i am thinking it has been running lean and potential for valve damage and such. Pic below. What do you think?
Yeah, it's running way lean. The bikes run lean to begin with to please the corrupt EPA, rear cylinder way too hot by the color on the pipes . I would do basic checks like compression and leak down to see if there is any major internal damage and then get a turner or have it dyno tuned to make sure you have the right amount of fuel going to match how much air is coming in .
I forgot to mention it only has 5000 miles on it. Just not sure if I should buy it or not. I have no idea if an engine can be wrecked by running lean for 5000 miles.
It doesn't take very long to warp valves or heads but you could pressure check on the cylinders to see if they're already bad or not.
Depending on price and hassle to you, it may be worth grabbing it, get the heads done and get a fuel controller on it before you put it back together.
I have taken the stock exhaust shields off of my two Dynas and had the same bluing on the headers/exhaust pipes. I put an inexpensive fuel controller on my 05 FXDLI knowing I wasn't going to upgrade the engine internals just intake and exhaust. Have you checked the spark plugs or the color in your exhaust? The plugs will tell you what's happening in the combustion chamber as far as burning extra lean. The fuel controller I use piggybacks on the injectors and you can adjust the pulse width (how long the injectors spray). You can adjust the idle mix, run mix and accel. mix with this controller. Are the mufflers stock? Good luck.
Theyre lean from the factory. With only the intake being done and not the exhaust it probably didn't hurt anything especially with only 5k miles on it. I wouldn't be afraid of buying it. Take it for a test ride, listen to the motor for any sounds that shouldn't be there. If you buy it, get a power vision from fuelmoto to take care of any tune issues.

What brand was your inexpensive Fuel Controller please ?
