I thought I would start a new thread. As some of you may have seen I had a major voltage spike that killed my Ignition Control Module, TSM, Low Beam Head Light, that resulted in the ignition and accessory fuses blowing and the bike dying on the side of the road. I have since replaced the TSM, Stator/Rotor, Volt Reg, and Dynatek Ignition Control Module. Bike fires right up, runs good, all the lights and turn signals work, speed works, but the tach no longer works. I'm thinking maybe the tach might have got fried too and I didn't notice as the bike died. Thought I would check to see how to test it first and where it picks up (tach signal, cam sensor, etc.).
Thanks
It counts how many times tach fires. I wonder if a wire is loose somewhere.
All I can see in the shop manual is that it is the Pink wire from the Tach is going to the Ignition Control Module. I checked the wires and don't see anything loose. Is there a way to test the tach to see if it broken. I can use my test light to test voltage to it. The bike wouldn't run if the cam sensor was shorted out would it?
As the tach utilizes a coil, it more than likely damaged the coil when it over voltaged.
I just took it off and it smells burnt...just like the TSM and Ignition Coil Module did. Is there a suitable replacement? I have been checking for the part number (assuming it is the part number..see pics) on the tach I took out of my bike. I can't find another one that looks like it. Bike is a 2000 FXDL.
OK so I found on a search that the tach wire signal could be tested at the connecter if using a multi meter set to AC not DC. Reason being is that the tach pulse signal will not register on DC, I got a voltage pulse on AC as the video said it would. I ordered a Bosch Tach from Amazon ($50 2-day delivery) as I couldn't find an Autometer 3 3/8" tach. Unfortunately the Bosch Tach is actually too deep to fit, but I was able to test things by putting some alligator clips on the positive, negative, and tach wires from the Bosch Tach to the wiring harness on the bike, fired it up, and the tach worked. So clearly the tach not working is because it got burned up also. Now to find a tach that works. I will stick the old one back in the hole for now and not connect it.
