You are going to get lots of answers for lots of reasons. Others love to spend others money. The bike is a good bike overall like most Harley's. How it was cared for, and what was done to it can make a difference though. How many miles are on the bike? Do you know of any upgrades to the engine, primary, or trans?
This is a 97 fxd. I just started with bars an riser then front and rear shocks and so on. Really depends on how far you want to go down the rabbit hole.
I remember when the FXDXT came out. I built several motors for customers as well as some other accessories. I have to admit that back then, it wasn't my kind of bike. About 10 years go by and I realize the FXDXT was one of Harleys best bikes and I kick myself for not pulling one out of a crate and keeping it. However you cannot own them all unless your rich, and I am not.
I can't believe no one has said it. Replace the inner cam bearing. The factory ones are cheap. At 39,000 miles, do the lifters while it is apart doing the bearing. That's minimum in my opinion. And why not a better cam while it's apart.
