I often wondered about the open filter since I just swithed to a ness BS on my sporty and for the time being just made a flat endcover out of sheetmetal painted black. I did notice after washing the bike the first time some water must have sat on top and gotin and the motor stumbled.
I may continue to leave it naked but getting caught in a real downpour could be an issue or if left sitting in the rain uncoverd. We got caught in some light rain today and it was not a problem. I though about just carrying a round cover in my travel bag just in case I needed to swap it out on a trip or something.

You can get covers here, or just make one out of a piece of aluminum or steel if you have the tools. Mine is just made out of a piece of 1/8" aluminum, 5.5" dia with a hole in the center. As for riding in the rain, it's not a problem unless you're in a downpour. My bike stumbled a few times once when I was in a heavy rain. Of course, it was raining so hard I couldn't see more than 10 feet and should not have been on the road anyway.

I just throw a plastic bag over mine when washing it.

I don't ride in heavy downpours either, that's what they make overpasses for.

An open element will suck in water in a heavy rain. Here in CO, you get some real gully washers that roll in and out quick. And there is no cover on the best riding roads. With that kind of rain, you will suck in water. Especially when that cager rolls by and splashes a big wave on you.

K&N makes a filter rain cover called a "Dry Sock". Go to their web site and find one that fits the closest to your application. Then find a dealer and order one.

Yes on the rain sock.

I've seen em.

Water rolls off like it's on a duck's back.

I have a BS stage 2 so the football cover doesn't fit, I like the look. I just ordered a cover from www.azece.com They have a pretty nice selection and not too expensive.

Mine is like the one Naz_Man has. I hated the dreaded Football. Canned the Cow Bell to...
I made a cover out of thin aluminum 3" wide by 14" long that wraps around the outside of the filter. It uses the 2, 1/4-20 screws to attach at the top, and had to drill the bottom and add another counter sunk 1/4-20 screw to secure it at the bottom. It rolls up in the tool bag and I have 3, 1/4-20 wing nuts to hold it on. Works well, looks OK, but I'm still more worried about my tool bag getting wet.
..wish I could post pics. dd
