Default Jiffy Stand Spring Removal

Since my primary is off I want to give the jiffy stand a thorough cleaning and re-anti-seizing (I got nothing better to do since I'm waiting on parts again). I searched through the forum and the inter-webs and my shop manual and have no definitive answer on how to PROPERLY remove the spring. I am really surprised that there is no disassembly instruction in my manual. I don't want to stick pennies in the spring, and I don't want to fight it with a vice-grip or screwdriver if I don't have to. There must be another way.

I saw that on a Softail after pulling the stop block you rotate the stand forward until the spring collapses. There are 2 stops on the Dyna but I think pulling the stand down slightly would clear the 2nd, has anyone done that? I could go out to the shop and give it a try, but I have to work so this is helping time go by. I also saw someone here on the forum say to just pull the stand out the bottom of the mount and take the spring off that way.

Anyway, killing time today so if you have thoughts, throw 'em out there.

With the frame upright and no weight on the stand (on the touring models, anyway), loosen the bolt that is going into the end of the stand arm and you can lift the locking tab off the square end of the stand, then rotate the entire arm forward, towards the front wheel.
This releases all tension on the spring and it can be removed from the arm & the frame without stretching it at all.

I can't see from a parts list how your jiffy stand is held on but my bike has a clevis pin and clip holding it on. With the stand in the up position that pin is quite easy to knock out and the stand drops away making it real easy to get the spring off.

From what I can tell, taking that pin out drops the whole unit, is that right?

Not sure if the process is the same for a Dyna, but this shows how its done on a Touring frame.

The video is for a touring or whats called a police stand on a few of my bikes. They are easy to change the spring.

No help on the Jiffy stand. I'd like to know as well.

Thanks for the input guys. I used my lunch hour to go out to the shop. Sorry for Harley's whack *** diagram, but here goes.
  • Remove 2 and 23. 25 was just a washer on my bike, I don't know what that's supposed to be in the diagram.
  • Push 18 down into the bore of 20 just enough so the fin on 18 will clear the tab on the bottom of the frame. Then you can swing 18 all the way forward until there is nearly 0 tension on the spring. The spring will come off by hand from there.
  • Remove 1, 5 and 22. This will allow 20 to be removed from the top.
  • Clean the **** out of all of it
  • Reassemble all of it in reverse order applying anti-seize to mating surfaces of 18, bore of 20, 22, top face of 20, top face of 23

You're probably right. Could be for a different model or HDI. Mine was just a flat washer. I can't believe how easy it was to get everything out...always love learning the right way to do something!
