Default Check your dipstick!!!

Check your dipstick!! Not that one!!

I had the 1000 mike check up done to my '07 DWG about a week and a half ago. I haven't ridden it since. Since it quit raining here I decided I will ride to work tomorrow. As always, I check the oil before riding and noticed that the oil was almost al the way to the top!!. About 2 inches at least above the hot full mark.

I was livid. I called up the dealer and chewed on them and told them I was bring the bike in and I wanted it corrected today.

The mechanic, wanting to know how much oil is in the bike, drained the oil into a measuring container and it was correct. 3 quarts.

He refilled my crank case with two quarts and checked the oil level. It showed almost full.

Now they think that the dipstick is incorrect so they pulled one out of a new '07 and the same thing. Which tells me that there is a lot of folks with two quarts of oil in their engine. Running the engine with two quarts doesn't bother me as much as too much oil so no real biggie.

They are supposed to contact HD tomorrow to find out what is going on.

Has anyone heard of this?

I did my first oil change last weekend and came up with the same thing. After draining the old oil, I startedadding the recommended 3 qts, per the owners manual. After feeling good about myself and cracking open a cold one I decided to pull the dipstick and make sure of the level. Much to my surprise it was reading well over full.I ended up having to drain damn nearhalf a quart to get the level within specs on the stick. Called the local H-D store and they tell me that upon changing oil, there is usually half a quart that doesn't drain so they only add around 2 1/2 qts.

So now my thoughts are, isn't that grand, I've got half a quart of used frickin oil left in there with my new oil...go figure!

doesn't make sense - there's so much reporting and complaining (myself included) going on in this forum - if this was a common problem - certainly we would have heard this before??????

When I did the 1K on my '07 SB, I drained the oil completely and put 2-1/2 qts of oil in and when I checked my oil cold, it was where it's supposed to be when hot. Shows too full. I left it alone. Talked to the guys at local shop and they say they put 3 qts in when they change oil. I used 2.5 qts because I downloaded the 2007 Maintenance Specifications for the models this year and for touring bikes, shows 3.5-4 qts, Softails, 3 qts, Dyna's 2.5-3 qts. Also, in the Owners manual, pg. 81..it states "Use 2.5 qts (2.4 Liters) of engine oil for capacity refill.

Stealer did the same thing to me on my 1000 mile service. I got home and checked the oil level andit was way over the full mark so I draind about a half qt. I then read in the manual it takes 2.5 qt unless you rebuild and then it takes 3qt. You would think that the stealer would no these things, after all I bought the service manual from them.

Umm the manual for the 07 states 2.5 quarts unless you did a tear down on your motor, then its 3 quarts.....not sure whats worse, the factthat the so called tech at the dealer put 3 quarts in it or that the dealer was to stupid to figure that out and told you to call HD
